School Systems Federal Credit Union is excited to announce we are now offering CardValet®, a new card management and fraud mitigation tool for debit cardholders. Cardholders simply download the free app from the Apple® App Store or Google® Play Store, and then you can actively manage your debit cards.
With this new and powerful debit card management tool, as a cardholder you can set parameters for when, where and how your debit card is used. It’s easy to ‘turn off’ your debit card from your smartphone, and then ‘turn on’ your debit card when you want to use it.
The on/off feature is only one of the safeguards available with CardValet®. Using the GPS system in the smartphone, geographic use restrictions can be established. Other controls can restrict usage by merchant and spending limit. Real time alerts create another layer of fraud protection with notice that a transaction was attempted, declined or both.
CardValet® puts the control of debit cards right into the cardholder’s hands. Link more than one School Systems FCU account to keep track of all your School Systems FCU debit cards in one easy-to-use application.
For more information, visit www.school-systems.com or contact us by phone at 518-286-1611 (Troy) or 518-456-1611 (Albany).
*** SCAM ALERTS ***
Debit Card Text Message Scams
Recently there have been numerous reports of text message scams across the United States and even locally, notifying consumers their debit card has been blocked and they need to call a telephone number to have it reactivated. Consumers are then asked to provide detailed information about their cards, including the card number, expiration date, PIN, etc. This type of scam is called "smishishing".
Don't fall victim to scams like this. School Systems FCU and other financial institutions will never ask for card. personal or account information via text message. Any messages you receive requesting your information via text should be considered suspicious and you should contact one of our branches directly.
DFS Warns of Scammers Using Department Name
The state Department of Financial Services is warning consumers about a new fraud scheme being carried out in New York. According to the DFS, scammers identifying themselves as department representatives are calling consumers regarding a credit union or bank “case” being “prosecuted” by the DFS against the consumer. The fraudsters—who also sometimes identify themselves as working for the Office of the Inspector General—then request personal information from the consumer.
The DFS is reminding consumers that the department does not prosecute court cases against consumers and does not represent banks or credit unions. Consumers who feel they have been targeted by scammers can file a complaint by visiting the DFS website, or calling the DFS Consumer Hotline at (800) 342-3736.
CUMBERLAND FARMS ATM'S ARE NO LONGER SURCHARGE FREE
As of June 2015, the Credit Union has been informed by the Co-Op ATM Network that Cumberland Farms ATM locations are no longer surcharge-free to members. Co-Op and the merchant were unable to reach an economically viable agreement to continue the surcharge-free access. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, as this was beyond our control.
Please use the zip code locator on the home page of our website to find other locations near you that are surcharge-free and continue to check back often, as the locator is updated frequently with new locations being added.
TRAVELING WITH YOUR SSFCU DEBIT OR CREDIT CARD?
If you are going to be traveling and plan to use your School Systems FCU Visa Debit Card, Visa Gold Credit Card or Visa Classic Credit Card, we encourage you to notify the Credit Union. Our card programs use a fraud monitoring system that will alert you by telephone or potentially decline transactions that exceed your typical spending patterns or geographic location. By notifying the credit union, we can place a travel exception on your card that includes the dates and location of your travel to help you avoid potential declines due to suspected fraud. This is especially important when traveling internationally, because so much fraud originates from foreign countries, most transactions will automatically decline without a travel exception being placed on the card.
These requests can be made by visting a branch, mailing us written notification, using the secure email through Virtual Branch or by calling us directly at 518-286-1611 (Troy) or 518-456-1611 (Albany).

SELECT CREDIT LIFE AND CREDIT DISABILITY ON YOUR CREDIT UNION LOANS
MEMBER’S CHOICE® Credit Disability and Credit Life Insurance
There is no way anyone can predict an injury, medical-related illness or an unexpected death, but you can take steps along the way to make sure your family is protected if the unforeseen were to happen. MEMBER’S CHOICE Credit Disability and Credit Life Insurance helps pay your loan so you and your loved ones don’t have to.
How does it work?
The premium is included in your monthly payment. If you have a balance on your loan and are totally disabled due to injury or illness, or in the event of an unexpected death, MEMBER’S CHOICE Credit Disability and Credit Life Insurance can help. By taking a few simple steps while signing your loan paperwork, you’re helping take responsibility for your family’s financial future. Your loan officer can show you how. You won’t receive extra bills or statements because everything is included in your monthly payment.
You can cancel within the first 30 days for a full refund or at any time after that if you change your mind. If at any point you have questions, of if your family needs to file a claim, simply contact your credit union. Once you complete the loan documents, coverage begins for eligible borrowers.
Why is it valuable?
MEMBER’S CHOICE Credit Disability and Credit Life Insurance works in two different ways. You and your family won’t have to make loan payments if you’re totally disabled due to an injury or medical-related illness. It will help pay your loan until you’re fully recovered. In the event of an unexpected death, it will pay off the loan. Savings, salary or payoffs from other life insurance may be protected, giving your family financial freedom when they need it most.
